National Preparedness Month: Caring for Your Pet

National-Preparedness-Month-Caring-for-Your-Pet

This month is National Preparedness Month. While this event primarily focuses on the importance of preparing for natural disasters and other emergencies and caring for your human family members, it’s also an excellent time to consider how you’d care for your pet in the event of an emergency. As your pet’s veterinarian in Daly City, we are here to help you give your furry friend a great life. That’s why we decided to share some tips on how to prepare for disasters involving your pet. Keep reading to learn more!

Plan for Evacuations

Countless pets are abandoned every time a natural disaster strikes. Unfortunately, the odds of your pet reconnecting with you or even surviving if left behind during a disaster are low. As a responsible pet owner, it’s up to you to include your four-legged family member in your evacuation plans

Do some research in advance to find pet-friendly shelters and hotels just in case you ever need to leave your home due to a natural disaster. Line up some alternatives, too, such as friends, co-workers, or relatives who would be willing to care for your pet if you had to evacuate.

Make an Animal Emergency Kit

Fill a backpack with essentials for caring for your pet in an emergency. This kit should include:

  • Leash, collar, and harness
  • Carrier for small pets
  • Copies of your pet’s most recent vaccination records, license, medical records, etc.
  • At least two weeks worth of medication
  • Basic first-aid kit
  • Food and water bowls
  • Bottled water and pet food
  • Your veterinarian’s phone number

If you have a cat, your kit should also include a small litter box and a bag of litter. Consider including a toy and some treats, too, to comfort your pet in the event of an emergency.
