Pet Vaccinations in San Francisco: Facts vs. Fiction

Pet-Vaccinations-in-San-Francisco_-Facts-vs.-Fiction

As a pet parent, having your dog or cat vaccinated is one of the best ways to ensure that they get to enjoy as many healthy years by your side as possible. Unfortunately, though, there are a lot of misconceptions out there that keep many well-meaning animal owners from keeping their pets’ vaccinations up-to-date. Here at Animal Farm Pet Hospital, we provide pet vaccinations in San Francisco and believe that they are critical components of wellness care. Keep reading to learn the truth about some common vaccine myths.

Fact: Even Indoor Pets Should Be Vaccinated

If you think that indoor pets don’t need to be vaccinated, think again. All pets should be kept up-to-date on core vaccines (like Rabies) regardless of how much time they spend outdoors. Our vets will help you determine which non-core vaccines your pet needs, too.

Fact: Vaccines Don’t Cause Illnesses

Puppies sometimes contract parvovirus after receiving the parvo vaccine. This has led to the misconception that vaccines can cause illnesses. The truth, though, is that young pets are extremely prone to illness. Though they are somewhat protected by antibodies from their mothers, those same antibodies can also make vaccines less effective. This means that your pet could get sick even after being vaccinated. Puppies and kittens are vaccinated several times during the first few months of their lives for this very reason.

Fact: Pet Vaccinations in San Francisco Are Safe

While there is always some degree of risk involved, pet vaccinations are generally safe and highly effective. The risk of severe side effects is extremely low, and the reward greatly outweighs the limited risk. Most patients have no side effects and those that do typically only experience mild temporary side effects that clear up on their own.

At Animal Farm Pet Hospital, we strongly recommend keeping your pet up-to-date on their vaccines. Doing so safeguards them against several illnesses and helps protect the community. To find out more or to schedule an appointment for pet vaccinations in San Francisco, give us a call now.
